The Monster 821 sits in that sweet spot where Ducati character meets everyday usability, but buying one used requires homework. The 821cc Testastretta twin pulls hard from 4,000rpm and sounds absolutely savage with a decent exhaust, but check the service history religiously — desmo valve services run $600-1,000 and many previous owners conveniently 'forgot' them. Look for bikes with documented 15,000-mile services and ask specifically about the belt change history. The riding position is genuinely comfortable for a naked bike, and the chassis feels telepathic through corners. DTC traction control and ABS are confidence-inspiring without being intrusive. Earlier 2014-2015 examples had some fueling hiccups at low speeds that Ducati improved in later models, so 2017-onward bikes are noticeably smoother in traffic. Seat quality is questionable beyond 90 minutes, and Italian electrics can surprise you if the bike sat unused. Budget an extra $1,500 above purchase price for a full service and peace of mind. Do that, and you've got one of the most rewarding middleweights available.
