Yamaha R7

The Yamaha R7 has a top speed of 180 km/h (est.), produces 73 hp and weighs 188 kg. Motoryk rates it 8/10.

🔧

Proven CP2 Engine

The R7 shares its 689cc parallel-twin engine with the MT-07, a platform with years of proven reliability and minimal reported failures. This engine requires valve checks every 26,600 miles, keeping maintenance costs relatively low.

📉

Strong Resale Value

The R7 holds its value exceptionally well due to high demand and limited production numbers in its segment. Used models often sell close to MSRP, especially low-mileage examples, making it a smart financial choice.

⚠️

Watch the Exhaust Headers

Some owners report premature discoloration and minor corrosion on the stock exhaust headers, particularly in wet climates. Inspecting this area on used bikes and budgeting for an aftermarket exhaust is a wise move.

"The honest sportbike that rewards skill without punishing beginners."

$7,500-$9,500 used

The R7 is basically a lightly faired MT-07 with clip-ons, and that's not a criticism — the 689cc parallel twin is one of the best middleweight engines built in the last decade. It pulls cleanly from low revs, rewards hard riding, and won't intimidate you into a ditch. Used examples are plentiful now since early adopters have moved on, which means you can find clean 2022-2023 bikes with under 5,000 miles for well under MSRP. What to watch for on used examples: check the subframe for crash damage — these get dropped at track days constantly. Inspect the fairings carefully because OEM replacements are expensive. The stock suspension is genuinely undersprung for anyone over 180 pounds, so budget for a rear spring at minimum. Previous owners who tracked it hard may have already fitted Öhlins forks, which is actually a bonus. It's not the most exciting machine on paper, but it handles with real precision and teaches you good habits. Excellent first sportbike that won't embarrass intermediate riders either.
