Ktm Adventure 990

The Ktm Adventure 990 has a top speed of 210 km/h, produces 114 hp and weighs 229 kg. Motoryk rates it 8.2/10.

The KTM 990 Adventure was introduced in 2006 as an evolution of the 950 Adventure, featuring a larger 999cc LC8 V-twin engine and improved chassis dynamics. It became a benchmark in the adventure touring segment, praised for its off-road capability combined with long-distance touring ability, competing directly with the BMW GS series. Production continued until 2013, when it was replaced by the 1190 Adventure, leaving behind a strong legacy as one of KTM's most celebrated dual-sport tourers.

What Buyers Should Know

⚙️

Watch the Cam Chain

The 990 Adventure is known for cam chain tensioner wear, especially on higher-mileage bikes. Always check service history and listen for rattling on cold starts before buying.

💰

Strong Resale Value

The 990 holds its value exceptionally well due to its cult following and discontinued status. A well-maintained example often sells for close to its original purchase price even years later.

🏍️

True Dual-Purpose DNA

Unlike many 'adventure' bikes, the 990 was genuinely capable off-road thanks to its lightweight LC8 V-twin engine and WP suspension, making it a rare bike that excels both on dirt and long-distance touring.

8.4/10

"Rawboned, brilliant, exhausting — adventure riding distilled to its essence."

The LC8 punches you in the kidneys every time you crack the throttle past 6,000 rpm, and I mean that as a compliment — 100 Nm from a thumping V-twin that sounds like a pissed-off muscle car makes every dirt road feel like a stage win. Off-road, the long-travel suspension and narrow waist genuinely embarrassed my mates on GS Adventures through rocky Moroccan pistes, though at 229 kg wet you'll feel every kilo if you drop it on a steep sidehill. The ergonomics are honest to a fault: that 860mm seat height is non-negotiable, the wind protection is minimal, and touring above 160 km/h for hours will grind you down. Reliability was my one real fear — early LC8 engines had oiling gremlins and the throttle bodies needed periodic sync — but if you stay on top of the service intervals, this thing will take you across continents.

Pros

+LC8 V-twin torque is intoxicating
+Surprisingly capable off-road chassis
+Narrow, flickable for the class
+Strong parts and tuning aftermarket

Cons

Early engine oiling issues lurk
Wind protection nearly nonexistent
Punishing on long highway slabs
Best for: Experienced riders craving analog adventure Skip if: Short inseam or highway commuter
2009–2013 Gen 2

990 Adventure R variant introduced with longer suspension travel, spoke wheels, and enhanced off-road capability.

Best for
Experienced riders wanting raw, unfiltered adventure touring

"A flawed masterpiece that absolutely rewards diligent pre-purchase inspection."

$5,500-$9,500 used

The 990 Adventure is one of those bikes that rewards experienced riders while genuinely punishing the unprepared. That LC8 V-twin is an absolute gem — torquey, characterful, and sounds properly angry when you crack the throttle. It'll pull hard from tickover and keep pulling until you're doing speeds you probably shouldn't mention. Pre-2013 models especially carry that raw, unfiltered KTM DNA that newer bikes have largely sanitized away. Here's the honest bit though — these things demand maintenance respect. The valve clearances need checking religiously, the throttle bodies require balancing, and neglected examples will drain your wallet fast. Always ask for service history. No records means walk away, simple as that. Check the subframe for cracks around the rear luggage mounts, inspect the WP suspension for leaks, and wiggle the steering head bearing. Previous owner abuse shows up quickly on these. Get a good one with solid history and you've arguably bought the last truly analog adventure bike worth owning. They're genuinely brilliant when properly sorted.
