Kawasaki Zzr1400

The Kawasaki Zzr1400 has a top speed of 299 km/h (electronically limited; estimated unrestricted ~320+ km/h), produces 210 hp and weighs 268 kg. Motoryk rates it 8.5/10.

The Kawasaki ZZR1400 (also known as the ZX-14R in North America) was introduced in 2006 as the successor to the ZZR1200, designed to reclaim the title of world's fastest production motorcycle from the Suzuki Hayabusa. It received a significant update in 2012 with revised engine tuning, traction control, and ABS, and remained in production until around 2020, becoming legendary for its combination of blistering performance and long-distance touring capability.

What Buyers Should Know

World's Fastest Production Bike

When launched in 2006, the ZZR1400 claimed the title of world's fastest production motorcycle with a governed top speed of 299 km/h. This heritage makes it highly desirable and helps retain collector interest.

🔧

Watch the Cam Chain

Higher-mileage ZZR1400s can develop cam chain tensioner noise, which is an early warning sign to address before it becomes costly. Always listen for a rattling sound on cold starts when buying used.

💰

Strong Resale Value

The ZZR1400 holds its value exceptionally well compared to competitors due to its legendary status and long production run from 2006 to 2020. Low-mileage examples especially command premium prices on the used market.

8.8/10

"The last honest hyperbike before electronics neutered everything."

I put 18,000 km on a 2008 ZZR1400 and nothing else from that era matched its split personality — docile enough to lane-filter through city traffic at 40 km/h, then absolutely savage the moment you hit a motorway on-ramp and crack the throttle past the midrange. That ram-air induction hits like a freight train above 7,000 rpm; you don't so much accelerate as relocate. The aluminum monocoque frame keeps it surprisingly planted for 258 kg of bike, but that weight is very real in slow car parks and on technical mountain roads where a ZX-10R will embarrass it. The linked braking system feels intrusive and wooden compared to a dedicated sportbike — I eventually learned to work around it rather than trust it fully.

Pros

+Ram-air torque hit is genuinely violent
+Monocoque frame, surprisingly composed at speed
+Long-haul comfort rivals half-faired tourers
+Engine refinement and low-rev tractability impressive

Cons

258 kg punishes slow-speed maneuvering
Linked brakes feel vague and intrusive
Fuel consumption spikes badly when pushed
Best for: Fast GT riders eating miles Skip if: You prefer canyon carving precision

Used Buyer Review

Best for
Experienced riders wanting fast, comfortable long-haul touring

"The ultimate fast-mile machine for experienced riders who respect consequences."

$6,000-$11,000 used

The ZZR1400 is essentially a nuclear warhead disguised as a sport-tourer, and buying one used is genuinely good value if you pick carefully. The 1441cc engine is almost comically powerful — 200-plus horsepower in stock trim — and it pulls hard enough to rearrange your organs at any speed in any gear. Early 2006-2011 models lack the electronic rider aids of later bikes, so treat those with respect. The chassis is surprisingly planted for something this heavy, and highway miles genuinely suit it better than canyon carving. For used buying, inspect the fairings carefully — replacement panels are expensive and fragile. Check for crash damage on the frame sliders and exhaust headers. Suspension sag on high-mileage examples is common, so bounce the forks and check rear linkage for slop. Anything over 30,000 miles deserves a compression test. Tyre condition matters enormously on a bike this fast — budget for fresh rubber immediately.
