Used Buyer Review

The EC 300 Factory is essentially a KTM 300 XC-W with red plastics and a slightly different tune — and that's not a bad thing at all. The Factory edition comes with Xplor suspension, a Neken handlebar, and a power valve that actually works. Buy one with less than 40 hours on it and you're laughing. These engines are bulletproof when properly maintained, but check the power valve actuator and reed cage before handing over cash — neglected ones get gritty fast. Inspect the expansion chamber carefully, especially around the welds near the header. Previous owners who ride tight woods tend to dent these repeatedly, and replacement pipes aren't cheap. Also verify the FMF or stock silencer packing — a blown-out silencer kills bottom-end grunt noticeably. Pre-mix ratio records are gold on these bikes. The power delivery is savage but usable once you learn the hit. First-time two-stroke buyers will get bucked. Experienced riders will grin constantly. It rewards commitment and punishes hesitation.

Pros

+KTM-proven engine reliability
+Factory suspension straight away
+Incredible power-to-weight ratio
+Strong used parts availability
+Responsive power valve system

Cons

-Steep learning curve beginner
-Expansion chamber dents easily
-Frequent pre-mix discipline needed
