Ik heb bijna 8.000 kilometer gereden op een R125 uit 2014 voor woon-werkverkeer en in het weekend, en wat me meteen opviel was hoe serieus Yamaha het chassis nam. Het stalen frame en de geometrie belonen echt de inzet om in de bochten te stappen, zoals de meeste 125's dat simpelweg niet doen. De vloeistofgekoelde motor trekt netjes naar het juiste toerental van 10.000 tpm, maar je zet die versnellingsbak absoluut constant aan het draaien op A-wegen, en alles boven de 100 km/u op een snelweg voelt alsof je een bang dier aan het geselen bent. De conventionele vorken zijn zacht en duiken bij hard remmen, en dat is de enige plek waar de oorsprong van het budget echt tot uiting komt. Maar voor een nieuwe rijder die leert bochten te lezen en gasdiscipline op te bouwen, zou ik zeggen dat dit me meer goede gewoontes heeft geleerd dan een slappe, luie machine ooit zou hebben gedaan.

Used, you need to check three things hard: the exhaust collector, which rots from the inside out on pre-2019 bikes; the front forks for oil seepage; and whether anyone's fitted a non-standard exhaust and potentially invalidated the insurance. Service history matters more here than on bigger bikes because neglected oil changes punish the little engine fast. Avoid anything above 20,000 miles unless the price reflects it significantly.
