Built from 1984 through 2003, these singles are genuinely tough — Yamaha got the recipe right early and barely touched it. The thumper engine will run forever if it's been maintained, and that's exactly where you need to focus your inspection. Cold-start behaviour tells you everything: it should fire within two or three kicks when cold. If the previous owner says it 'needs a warm-up ritual,' walk away. Rust is the real enemy here. Check the frame around the headstock and swingarm pivot religiously — surface stuff is fine, structural pitting is not.
