Yamaha Xt600

The Yamaha XT600 was introduced in 1984 as an evolution of the earlier XT500, featuring a more modern single-cylinder four-stroke engine and becoming one of the most popular dual-sport/enduro motorcycles of its era. It gained widespread recognition for its reliability and versatility, being used in long-distance adventure riding including the Paris-Dakar rally scene. Production continued through various updates until around 2003, when it was eventually succeeded by the XT660R.

What Buyers Should Know

🔧

Rock-Solid Reliability

The XT600's air-cooled single-cylinder engine is renowned for its simplicity and longevity, often running well past 100,000 km with basic maintenance. Its straightforward design makes it easy and cheap to work on yourself.

⚠️

Watch the Carb & Valves

Common issues include gummed-up carburetors from ethanol fuel and neglected valve clearances, which can cause hard starting and poor performance. Always verify valve adjustments have been done every 6,000 km before buying.

💰

Strong Resale Value

The XT600 holds its value well due to its cult following among adventure and dual-sport riders worldwide. A well-maintained example is easy to sell and commands a premium over comparable bikes of its era.
