Yamaha R3

🔧

Strong Long-Term Reliability

The R3's 321cc parallel-twin engine is known for exceptional durability with minimal issues when maintenance intervals are followed. Many owners report 20,000+ miles with no major mechanical problems.

⚠️

Watch for Stator Failures

Early models (2015-2018) had a known stator and regulator/rectifier issue that could cause charging system failure. Always check the electrical system and service history before buying used.

💰

Holds Resale Value Well

The R3 retains strong resale value compared to competitors due to Yamaha's brand reputation and consistent demand from new riders. A well-maintained used R3 typically sells for 75-85% of its original price within the first two years.

"The sharpest entry-level sportbike bargain you can buy used today."

$3,500-$5,500 used

The R3 is genuinely one of the smartest used buys in the small-bore sport segment right now. Yamaha built these things properly — the parallel-twin is smooth, reliable, and practically bulletproof if it's been serviced. Check the chain, sprockets, and brake pads first; neglectful owners are everywhere in this segment. The 2019+ refresh brought better suspension and sharper styling, so prioritize those years if your budget allows. Mileage matters less than maintenance history here. On the road it's engaging without being intimidating — you can actually learn to corner properly on this bike rather than just hanging on for dear life. Highway cruising above 80mph gets buzzy, and pillions genuinely suffer, but that's not what this bike is about. Avoid anything that's been track-dayed hard without documented fork and tire attention. Insurance is cheap, fuel economy is excellent, and parts availability is solid. For what you're paying used, there's almost nothing that touches it.
