For used buying specifically, check the chain and sprockets religiously — owners tend to neglect them because they never ride it hard enough to notice wear. Inspect the fairings for tip-over damage; these things are heavy and awkward at parking lot speeds. Post-2012 bikes got revised suspension and traction control, which matters enormously.
