La moto de 738 cc, refrigerada por aire, arranca sin problemas a partir de unas 4.000 rpm y tiene una agradable escofina mecánica en la parte superior, aunque 68 caballos no van a avergonzar a nadie en un 600 moderno. La maniobrabilidad es más competente que inspiradora: el amortiguador único funciona bastante bien en carreteras lisas, pero se vuelve impreciso en asfaltos rotos, y la parte delantera se comunica de una forma amortiguada que lleva tiempo confiar. Lo que Kawasaki hizo bien es en términos de ergonomía y accesibilidad: el asiento de 800 mm de altura se adapta a una amplia gama de ciclistas, el repostaje es nítido y predecible, y todo es muy sencillo de mantener en casa con las herramientas básicas.

The ZR7 is one of those bikes that never quite got the credit it deserved. Kawasaki built it as a naked middleweight from 1999 to 2004, and it's aged remarkably well. The 738cc inline-four is bulletproof — seriously, these engines just don't die if you give them basic maintenance. Power delivery is smooth and predictable rather than exciting, which actually makes it a brilliant all-rounder for commuting and weekend blasts without scaring yourself stupid. Where it gets interesting on the used market is value. You can pick up a clean example for peanuts, and parts are still findable. The ergonomics are genuinely comfortable for longer rides — upright enough to save your wrists without feeling like you're on a tractor. Handling is competent if not inspiring.
