J'ai parcouru 18 000 km sur une 696 rouge en trois ans, et ce bicylindre en L de Desmo n'a jamais cessé de me faire sourire : il est lent en dessous de 5 000 tr/min mais s'allume avec une urgence mécanique rauque au-delà de 7 000 tr/min, qu'aucun jumeau parallèle japonais ne peut simuler. Le châssis en treillis et les fourches Showa sont véritablement réglables pour un vélo « débutant ». Pesant 169 kg, il parcourt la circulation urbaine avec une facilité embarrassante. Cela dit, le siège d'origine se transforme en planche de bois au bout de 90 minutes, les intervalles d'entretien obligent un concessionnaire Ducati à se rendre tous les 7 500 km à un coût réel, et la pression sur le levier d'embrayage en cas de circulation arrêt-démarrage vous causera des crampes à la main gauche à la fin du trajet. Ce n'est pas un moyen de transport parfait, c'est une moto que vous voulez vraiment conduire, ce qui est complètement différent.
