Used Buyer Review

The XT600 is one of those bikes that rewards patient buyers who do their homework. Built from 1984 through 2003, these singles are genuinely tough โ€” Yamaha got the recipe right early and barely touched it. The thumper engine will run forever if it's been maintained, and that's exactly where you need to focus your inspection. Cold-start behaviour tells you everything: it should fire within two or three kicks when cold. If the previous owner says it 'needs a warm-up ritual,' walk away. Rust is the real enemy here. Check the frame around the headstock and swingarm pivot religiously โ€” surface stuff is fine, structural pitting is not. Carburettor diaphragms harden with age and kill throttle response, budget $50-80 for a rebuild kit regardless. Forks leak eventually on anything over 15 years old, so factor in a seal service. Electrics are blessedly simple but check every connection for corrosion. What you get is a genuinely capable adventure-tourer that'll go anywhere, fix itself with basic tools, and never strand you 200 miles from civilisation. That's worth a lot.

Pros

+Bulletproof single-cylinder engine
+Simple DIY-friendly mechanics
+Excellent long-distance capability
