Used Buyer Review

The TMAX 530 sits in a weird but brilliant middle ground โ€” it's not a scooter you'll be embarrassed to park next to proper bikes, and it's not a motorcycle that'll intimidate newer riders. Yamaha's 530cc parallel-twin pulls surprisingly hard from low revs, and the dual-clutch automatic transmission on later SX models is genuinely clever, not a gimmick. For city commuting into weekend canyon runs, few machines cover that ground as competently. Buying used, check the CVT belt carefully โ€” they're not cheap to replace and previous owners often ignore the service intervals. The underseat storage is smaller than you'd expect for something this size, and if you're over six-foot, the ergonomics get cramped on longer stints. Pre-2017 models lack the keyless ignition and revised suspension that make the bike significantly more refined. Spend the extra money for a 2017-onwards example if you can โ€” the improvements are real and tangible, not just badge engineering.

Pros

+Bulletproof engine, rarely causes trouble
+Flickable handling for the weight
+Strong resale value holds
+Premium build quality throughout
+Effortless urban commuting machine

Cons

-CVT belt replacement is expensive
-Cramped for taller riders
-Underseat storage disappoints
-Heavy at low speed maneuvering
