Zero Ds

Battery Longevity Matters
The Zero DS uses a Z-Force lithium battery rated for over 100,000 miles before significant degradation, but used buyers should verify charge cycle history and check for reduced range, as battery replacement can cost $3,000–$5,000.
Steep Depreciation Curve
Zero DS models depreciate quickly — often 30–40% in the first two years — making used models a strong value buy, though resale slows further if newer software-updated models hit the market.
Nearly Zero Maintenance
With no oil changes, no clutch, no valves to adjust, and minimal brake wear due to regenerative braking, the DS has dramatically lower maintenance costs than comparable gas dual-sports, saving hundreds per year.

"Smart urban buy if range limitations genuinely don't bother you."
$7,000-$12,000 usedThe Zero DS is genuinely clever engineering wrapped in a slightly awkward package. As a used buy, it makes a lot of sense — depreciation hits these hard in the first few years, so you can grab a 2019-2021 model for serious money off list price. The powertrain is legitimately impressive: that instant torque makes city riding addictive, and the drivetrain is essentially maintenance-free compared to any gasser you've owned. Here's where it gets honest though. Range anxiety is real and the charging infrastructure reality doesn't match Zero's marketing. Budget for the Charge Tank option if the previous owner didn't fit one — Level 2 charging without it is painfully slow. Check the battery health obsessively before buying; a degraded pack is an expensive problem. The suspension is adequate but not exciting, and the chassis feels slightly heavy for what it is. For urban commuting and weekend blasts under 80 miles, it's genuinely brilliant. Expecting it to replace a touring bike? Walk away now.
