"A brilliant entry sportbike that rewards skilled riders without punishing beginners."

$7,000-$9,500 used

The R7 is essentially a CP2-engined middleweight sportbike wearing R1 clothing, and that's both its charm and its limitation. The 689cc parallel-twin punches well for street riding — torquey, predictable, never intimidating — and the chassis is genuinely sublime. Yamaha nailed the ergonomics here; it's aggressive without destroying your wrists on a 90-minute commute. Used examples have been solid mechanically, but check for lowside damage religiously. Track day heroes love dropping these things. The big gripe is electronics — you're getting basic traction control and that's your lot. No cornering ABS, no multiple riding modes, no quickshifter from factory. For the money, KTM's RC 390 and Aprilia's RS 660 offer genuinely more sophisticated packages. Also, the mirrors are decorative at best, immediately replace them. Heat management in traffic is noticeable but not unbearable. Used pricing has settled nicely post-pandemic frenzy. Find a clean 2022 around $7,500 and you've got a brilliant first sportbike or an entertaining second machine for someone who's done their time on litre bikes.
