Moto Guzzi Stelvio 1200

The Moto Guzzi Stelvio 1200 has a top speed of 210 km/h, produces 105 hp and weighs 259 kg. Motoryk rates it 7.5/10.

The Moto Guzzi Stelvio 1200 was introduced in 2008 as Guzzi's entry into the adventure-touring segment, named after the famous Stelvio mountain pass in the Italian Alps. It was built around the proven 1151cc 90-degree V-twin engine and featured shaft drive, a hallmark of Moto Guzzi touring bikes, making it well-suited for long-distance travel. The NTX variant arrived around 2011 with updated electronics and styling, and the model remained in production until approximately 2017, celebrated for its characterful Italian engineering and all-road capability.

What Buyers Should Know

⚙️

Transverse V-Twin Power

The 1151cc 90-degree V-twin engine is mounted longitudinally, giving the Stelvio a unique low center of gravity and distinctive shaft-drive setup that eliminates chain maintenance entirely.

🔧

Watch the Throttle Bodies

Early models (2008-2011) are known for throttle body synchronization issues causing rough idle and stuttering — always verify this has been properly serviced or updated before buying.

💰

Stable Resale Value

The Stelvio holds its value reasonably well due to its cult following and limited production numbers, but its niche appeal means the buyer pool is smaller, so pricing must be competitive to sell quickly.

7.8/10

"A flawed, soulful adventurer that rewards patient riders."

The 1151cc transverse V-twin punches out of corners with that unmistakable Guzzi thump — torquey, characterful, and genuinely enjoyable once you learn to work with the shaft-drive lurch on throttle transitions. At 259 kg wet it's a big ask on technical trails, and the optional ABS felt agricultural by 2008 standards, but two-up across alpine passes it's composed, unhurried, and deeply comfortable over long days. The 50mm forks handle European tarmac beautifully though they feel vague when the road turns to loose gravel — this is fundamentally a road tourer wearing adventure clothing. I put 18,000 km on mine in two seasons and loved it despite its quirks, but the heat from those exposed cylinders on summer city riding is legitimately brutal.

Pros

+Torquey V-twin with genuine character
+Exceptional two-up long-distance comfort
+Robust, rebuildable mechanicals
+Planted alpine highway stability

Cons

Shaft lurch disrupts slow technical riding
Punishing engine heat in traffic
Heavy for real off-road use
ABS calibration feels rudimentary
Best for: Touring riders valuing character over capability Skip if: You plan serious off-road use
2011–2015 Gen 2

Experienced tourers wanting soul over technology

"Flawed, characterful, and deeply rewarding for the right rider."

$6,500-$11,000 used

The Stelvio 1200 is one of those bikes that rewards patience and forgiveness in equal measure. That big 90-degree V-twin pulls hard from low revs and sounds genuinely spectacular, but it's the character that gets you — this thing vibrates, transmits, and communicates in ways modern adventure bikes simply don't. Torque is abundant, handling is surprisingly competent for a tall bike, and the shaft drive means zero chain maintenance headaches on long tours. Used examples need careful scrutiny though. Check the bevel drive housing for leaks, inspect the throttle bodies for flat spots, and verify the alternator belt has been serviced — it's a known weak point that gets ignored. Earlier models had mediocre suspension that benefits hugely from aftermarket upgrades. Electronics are basic by today's standards, fuel economy is modest, and the gearbox needs deliberate, firm shifts or it'll clunk angrily at you. Budget for a full service immediately after purchase.
