The XL 1200 Custom is one of those bikes that looks better than it rides, but that's not necessarily a dealbreaker. The 1200cc Sportster engine is genuinely characterful — torquey from low revs, with that classic potato-potato burble that Harley faithful worship. It's narrow enough to filter traffic and light enough that smaller riders won't feel intimidated. Just don't expect sport bike dynamics or highway comfort on anything over an hour. Buying used, you're likely inheriting someone's accessory addiction. Check for janky bolt-on chrome that's been poorly fitted, aftermarket exhausts that drone at motorway speeds, and — critically — whether the previous owner skipped the 5,000-mile primary chain and oil services. These engines will go 80,000 miles with proper care and die at 20,000 without it. Compression test is non-negotiable before purchase. The 2004-2010 models are the sweet spot: fuel injection arrived in 2007, which dramatically improves cold starts and reliability. Avoid anything with a leaking inner primary or weeping rocker boxes — both signal chronic neglect.
