The Forty-Eight is Harley's most polarizing Sportster, and honestly, that's exactly what makes it interesting. That stubby 2.1-gallon peanut tank is the elephant in the room — you're stopping every 80-100 miles, full stop. But strip that away and you've got one of the most characterful, torque-rich middleweights in the used market. The 1200cc air-cooled V-twin pulls hard from low rpm, the low seat suits shorter riders brilliantly, and it genuinely turns heads in a way that bigger Harleys somehow don't. Buying used, inspect the primary chain tensioner and check for oil weeping around the rocker boxes — both are common on high-mileage examples. Models from 2016 onward got revised suspension that's noticeably better than earlier bikes. Avoid anything with dealer bolt-ons that weren't maintained properly; Stage 1 kits done right are fine, botched ones are headaches. Budget for a larger aftermarket tank if you're touring — it's almost non-negotiable.
