Used Buyer Review

The Sportster 1200 Custom is Harley's entry point done right โ€” low seat, manageable weight, and that thumping V-twin character that makes every ride feel like an event. The 1200cc Evolution or rubber-mounted engine pulls strong from idle, and the forward controls give it genuine cruiser ergonomics without feeling like you're piloting a barge. Pre-2014 models have the older Evolution engine which is bulletproof if maintained, while 2014+ rubber-mounted units are noticeably smoother on longer hauls. Buying used, you're hunting for neglect signs. These bikes attract first-timers who drop them constantly โ€” check the engine cases, footpeg mounts, and exhaust headers for crash damage. Oil leaks around the primary and transmission are common but usually cheap fixes. The belt drive is genuinely excellent, just inspect it carefully. Suspension is genuinely terrible stock โ€” both ends need upgrading before serious riding. Budget another $500-800 for progressive springs minimum.

Pros

+Bulletproof engine, easy maintenance
+Massive aftermarket parts availability
+Genuine low seat height
+Strong resale value retention
+Iconic sound and character

Cons

-Stock suspension is awful
-Two-up riding is miserable
-Vibration fatigues on highways
-Oil leaks if neglected
