Used Buyer Review

The Switchback is Harley's clever party trick โ€” a touring bike that strips down to a cruiser in about 20 minutes. Detachable fairing, fold-flat bags, it genuinely works. On the used market you're typically looking at 2012-2016 examples, and the 103ci Twin Cam engine is the sweet spot. It's torquey, characterful, and reasonably reliable if the previous owner wasn't a complete savage about maintenance. Check the primary chain tensioner and look hard at the rear cam chain tensioner โ€” that's the Achilles heel on these motors. Riding it, the Dyna chassis is noticeably sharper than Softail or Touring platforms. It actually moves around corners with some intent. The switchback function is genuinely useful if you do mixed riding โ€” weekend blasts plus occasional longer hauls. Ergonomics suit medium-height riders well. Avoid anything with excessive customization or obvious crash damage on the right footpeg area, that's your telltale low-side indicator. For the money, it's a genuinely versatile American V-twin that doesn't make you choose between styles.

Pros

+Dual-purpose design actually works
+Dyna chassis handles respectably
+103ci torque is addictive
+Strong used parts availability
+Distinctive, not cookie-cutter

Cons

-Cam tensioner issues plague Twin Cam
-Heavy for a naked cruiser
-Switchback gimmick wears thin
-Vibration through pegs at highway speed
warning
Avoid if

You prioritize cornering performance over character
