The R 18 is BMW doing something genuinely unusual — a proper cruiser built around that enormous 1802cc boxer twin that just thumps along like nothing else in the segment. Used examples from 2021-2022 can be found well under MSRP now, and that's honestly when the value proposition starts making sense. The engine is the whole story here: massive torque, beautiful mechanical character, and that distinctive air-cooling aesthetic. It's slow-revving and deliberately unhurried, which either speaks to your soul or absolutely doesn't. Practically speaking, the R 18 is heavy and unwieldy at low speeds — genuinely punishing in parking lots. Early models had software niggles and the suspension setup felt wooden on base trims. Check service history carefully; the final drive and shaft components need attention around 12,000 miles. Avoid anything that's been heavily modified cosmetically, as owners go overboard customising these and sometimes hide crash damage under chrome. Inspect the footboard mounts and check the fuel tank for dents — they're expensive to replace. If the price is right, this is a genuinely special motorcycle.
