The 500 EXC is KTM's big-bore enduro weapon, and used examples are everywhere right now — which tells you something about how hard owners push them. That LC4-derived single thumps out serious torque and will genuinely embarrass trail bikes twice its price, but these engines drink oil and the WP suspension needs constant attention to stay dialed in. Buy one that's been serviced properly and it's brilliant. Buy a neglected example and you're funding someone else's rebuild. Checking used ones, look hard at the airbox and filter — dusty neglect kills these motors fast. The six-speed gearbox is slick when healthy but develops a notchy first-to-second shift when worn. Hour meters rarely tell the full story; focus on the PDS shock condition and whether the header pipe is heat-blued from lean running. Pre-2017 models had intermittent fuel mapping issues that proper tuning typically sorted. Run well, this is one of the most capable dual-sport machines money can buy. Run hard and ignored, it's an expensive lesson.
