💰 Annual upkeep ~$500-1000 🔩 Reliability 6/10 Belt-driven 8-valve liquid-cooled V-twin needing 10000 km desmo valve-clearance service and strict 2-year cam belt changes; reliable if serviced but expensive and labour-intensive, with dry clutch, charging system and rocker wear the usual trouble spots.

Cam belts are non-negotiable

The 748's Desmoquattro engine uses rubber timing belts that must be replaced every 2 years or roughly 6,000–12,000 miles regardless of condition. A snapped belt destroys valves and pistons, so always demand documented belt service history.

Watch charging and clutch wear

Regulator/rectifier failures, corroded wiring connectors and worn dry-clutch plates are the classic 748 complaints — a loud rattle at idle is normal, but slipping or dragging means a clutch pack is due. Also check for leaking fork seals and sticky Showa suspension on high-mileage bikes.

📈

Rare versions hold value best

Standard 748 Biposto models remain the cheapest way into a 916-style Ducati superbike, while the 748SP, SPS and especially the Öhlins-equipped 748R are appreciating collector bikes. The 748's short-stroke, high-revving twin needs to be wrung out to 11,000 rpm, giving it a character closer to a race bike than the torquier 916/996.
